Why Freebsd ?
Quite simply because I like simple and tidy things.
I have been a Linux user and sys-admin for several years (15+) now. I witnessed lot of (big) changes in all major distributions: debian, redhat (centos), slackware.
And I come to say to myself that the work on the Linux kernel is excellent. way better than Freebsd regarding new hardware support. But for the rest gosh, userland is messy. Each distribution has its own sauce. Systemd came and has federated things a bit regarding init, but also brought its share of (big) mess.
The conf files in linux are distributed everywhere and that makes it difficult to spot which file to edit.
*BSD in general, stick to simple, well-ordered things. Not to mention the ports which are very handy when you want a particular version of a package or particular branch of code of a package.
Also, the documentation provided directly in the various handbooks is outstanding and crystal clear.
And what about the great firewall PF <3
